Nathan's Birth Story

written April 28, 2010

My due date of April 25 came and went without a sign of labor near. No contractions and hardly any pressure. I had scheduled an induction with my midwife for the morning of the 27. It was scheduled due to a lack of movement and even though the biophysical came back fine, we decided to go for it sooner rather than later.

Monday morning my mom, Ava, and I went for a spa day. We got our mani/pedis and waxed. I has feeling more pressure after my pedicure massage but I had been pooping all morning and just felt like it was constipation.

Since I got my face waxed I wanted to shower and get ready in prep for induction in the morning, so we went home to get all prepared.

On the way home I had a couple of contractions that lasted about 15-30 seconds, but they were the first real contractions I had felt this whole pregnancy. At this time it was 3 pm. I didn't mention anything to my mom and got in the shower. In the shower I started to have timeable contractions lasting about 30 seconds and coming every 3-4 minutes and pretty painful. I started to get nervous but decided to get ready and try not to pay attention to them.

I quickly found that to be impossible and told my mom we would probably end up going in tonight rather than waiting because I was having contractions. She started to freak out so I called the hospital to reassure her that because my contractions were I only lasting 30 seconds, I needed to wait.
I planned to have a natural labor and tried to keep it together. I knew I had to still drop off Ava at the babysitter's, so I was anxious about the 30 min car ride.

At about 4:45 pm I decided I was in too much pain and eventhough they were still short, we left.
I arrived at the hospital at about 5:45 pm and as soon as I sat on the bed to be monitored, my water broke. It was an amazing feeling since it didn't happen naturally last time. I got checked and was at 6 cm. At that point I was losing it. I couldn't concentrate and asked for the epidural. The man came in to give me an iv and was able to get it in my hand when I had a serious urge to poo. I couldn't stop myself from pushing and the on call midwife raced in.

She verified I was complete and his head was coming out. I would have had him out in one push, but I somehow found the power to listen to the midwife as she told me to take a deep breath to help prevent a big tear. 2 more pushes later, and at 6:12 pm Nathan was born weighing 7 lbs 8 oz and 20.5 inches long.
They waited to clamp his cord and we laid together for a while skin to skin. It was amazing.

I stayed at the hospital for about 20 hours before both of us were discharged. We're now home and comfortable and working on our breastfeeding routine.

I feel amazing and was up and walking less than an hour after having him.

Ava helped give him his first bath and changed his first poopy diaper. She loves it and is very helpful.

Ava's Birth Story

Written September 2, 2007

I had my beautiful daughter on thursday!

I had been having contractions about ten minutes apart for about 24 hours, and thursday morning my mom and I gave my dog a bath and the contractions all of a sudden started hitting really hard and fast (3-5 minutes apart), so my mom talked me into going in to the hospital because I was afraid they would send me home.

So we went in and I was in tears from the pain and we waited for about 30 minutes while they hurridly cleaned a room for me.

Once I got changed they had the on call doc come check me, and it happened to be my favorite doctor! I was at a 3 and 80% effaced. She asked if I wanted to have a baby that day and when I told her yes she broke my water.

The contractions were so intense I was having a hard time handling myself, though I was told I did a really good job keeping it together(they tell everyone that, right?), so they put my IV in (after 6 tries. I guess my veins get really tense and don't bleed or something)
I got a shot of pain killers and they had the epidural guy come in.. after what seemed like forever... and after that I was in heaven. I realized that anesthesiologists talk too much.

They checked me again about an hour or so after the epidural and I was at 7 and completely effaced. the doc said it would be about an hour and i'll start pushing.

So once I started pushing my contractions completely stopped. We tried to work through it, but it just wasn't happening so they gave me a tiny bit of pitocin and they came back, but were really weak.

After 2 hours of pushing and waiting and pushing my lil girl came out kinda sideways...

Everything was so wonderful and almost perfect!

She got a 9/9 apgar and perfectly healthy.

I love her so much!
